I like it a lot. It is a book that draws your attention and when they are on the adventures to the different places it sounds like it really happened and I can't wait until the next one comes out. I hope it will be as exciting as in the key to Chintak and I also hope they will be full of new exciting things that happen to Arthur and Millie. I also hope they make a film of it that would be great so you could see the adventures of Arthur and Millie and see them get into trouble. How did you think to write a book as good as the key to Chintak. It is that is amazing to be able to do that.

Firle CE Primary School
What the teachers said:
Douglas Kidd – Head Teacher:
I thought you interacted with the children well - you enthused them about your book and the process of writing well, they were engaged and interested. The focus on mysteries and the use of the website to engage them in speculating about how the book would develop worked well. The kids were interested in what you had to say about the process of writing and getting the book out - as was I to be honest since you had gone about it in such a unique and independent way. I would definitely recommend you to another school and have you back and the way you put the whole thing together made the whole process painless to organise. I know several of the kids finished the book and enjoyed it.
What the children said:
Zannia - Aged 10
The Key to Chintak is a very exhilarating story, I loved the dodos especially they were really cool and funny. The story build up is amazing and it paints an incredible picture in your mind. I adore books that make you feel attached to the characters and this one did exactly that. I loved the idea of a secret continent unknown. Also the idea of the book only able to be read by Millie was another wonderful idea but when she reads it on tape you can’t hear anything den den den! I think I speak for everyone in our class and hopefully everyone who has read your book that it is a truly amazing story.

Adrianna - Aged 11
This book is brilliant. I have been wanting to ask you how many books are there in the series? The imagination is really good. I like the way the story says about how only Millie reads some of the book to her granfather and when he goes to read some he can’t see the words.
Marcus - Aged 11
I really enjoyed your visit during book week. I've bought your book and am really enjoying it, so far it's an outstanding read. During your talk you gave me an overload of ideas. I'm a very enthusiastic reader and writer, and I found you very funny like the rest of the class, but the way you've written it sounds fascinating. I liked the idea of mixing fantasy with real life together. The visit was thoroughly enjoyable as you taught me many interesting facts, such as the underwater city Mu, until your visit I never knew about it, and the great pyramid, I was the one who told the others it was Khufu's pyramid, yet I never knew about the doors until your visit. The lines you talked about, do you know how they were made? That would be a fact that I'd love to know, and also, that picture called the astronaut, does it have a purpose? These questions I've been thinking about from when you told us about them.

The classes you visited were so 'buzzed' that even the Head got in on the act and was asking me about you. He said that all the other teachers were sulking that they'd missed out!
Liz Johnson - Teacher
John Howard is not just an author, he is a children’s entertainer! While outlining the story of ’The Key to Chintak’ he mesmerised my class of 34 year 5's (a lively bunch) for over an hour with tantalising glimpses of the story. At the same time he questioned the children (and the adults) to draw out the facts around which his story is based. I definitely look forward to getting my copy of this time for the Christmas holidays!

What the children said:

Everyone in my Carnegie Book Group has been asked to write on for Blue Peter.
Here is mine:
The Key to Chintak is a fun and fast-paced novel sweeping you into the world of Millie, a 12 year old who can read a mysterious book with no writing. As the book takes you into fact mixed with fiction, visit every continent while collecting key pieces and solving real life mysteries. But can they do it before the Belendrians get them?
I found this book really enjoyable, I've never read a book that combines fact and fiction!
The characters are ones you can relate with, and they keep you on your feet. The book is fast-paced, but slow enough so you understand what is happening. It's funny, scary, and very enticing. I couldn't put it down! A magical read. DON'T miss it!
Susannah - Aged 12

Thank you very much for your chat to our year 5 & 6 pupils; it was very well received and Ottakers have already sold out of the book BUT many pupils are awaiting the phone call to say their order has arrived!! Those that are already reading it gave it rave reviews so the sales should keep increasing! Should you wish to trial the sequel with any real, live children we'd be pleased to accommodate you!!

Your visits were both inspiring and intriguing! The majority of our children purchased a copy of your book as they genuinely wanted to find out what happened to Millie on her quest. Several children, boys and girls, told me it was the best book they had ever read! I found the book pacy and absorbing.... I love the fact that you had a female main character. Both Millie and her granddad were depicted clearly and it was easy to feel empathy for them. The plot twisted and turned in an exciting way and the ending, though satisfying left you on the edge of Millie's next adventure. Good luck with the sequel.
What the children said:
Adam - Aged 11
I got half way through the book and was telling my dad about Millie etc, when he pinched it and read the whole book. We both loved it. Bring on the next book please

I think the book is really COOL so far I can’t wait to read the next chapter! I think the book is better than J.K Rowling books, because it’s more exiting and adventurous and you just can’t put the book down. So keep righting John!!!!!. I can’t wait for the next book to come out, so e-mail me when it does!
Michael - Aged 10
It’s wonderful to find a good read once and a while and this is one of the best reads ever!
Oliver - Aged 10
I’ve not finished the book but I’m over half way. This is probably one of the best books I’ve read. I especially love the part in south america. A re you going to start your second book soon can’t wait. AND I finished the book yesterday IT WAS GREAT. Whenever Millie got near a key piece I kind of felt what the pain might be like it was a very good book to empathise. This is honestly one of the best books I’ve ever read, I just wanted to keep reading. I just can’t wait for the next book to come out.

All three classes really enjoyed your talk and my class look forward to 'silent reading' sessions so that they can read 'The key to Chintak'. I think adventure stories are particularly appropriate to this age group, because they need something to get their teeth into. I like the fact that the story is based round some real mysteries, some of which the children will come across in history lessons. I finished 'The Key to Chintak' over breakfast this morning so wanted to let you know what I thought straight away. I don't do mindless flattery, so this is what I really think! I thought the story was great. I found myself thinking about it during the day when I was doing other things and looking forward to reading the next part. I thought the plot, although quite complicated, worked well and there were no inconsistencies. The pace was just right, too.
What the children said:
Isaac - Aged 11
I thought the book was absolutely brilliant, the best book I have read in ages. I cannot wait for the next one!
Katy - Aged 10
The key to Chintak is definitely in my favourites, maybe even my favourite! It's so good, I’ve been in despair if I got to a part where you can't draw your eyes away and I have to stop! It's utterly wonderful. Superb. Speechless. I CAN'T WAIT UNTIL THE SECOND COMES OUT! Thanks for creating new fantasies for me!

Thank you so much for coming along to school and talking to the children about your book, you gave just enough away to get them hooked! They loved they idea that you were mixing fact and fiction. They enjoyed your reading extracts, especially when you got my colleague and I to come and mime a section out to them! Since your visit, many of them have been really engrossed in your book, for the first time some are grabbing any opportunity to read (even sneakily during lessons!) Each morning, they compare with each other which page they are on and I hear them excitedly discussing the chapters they have read. I really loved reading the book myself, in fact, I couldn’t put it down, I finished it in 2 days because I had to know what was going to happen next. I loved the way ancient sites were worked into the story, especially the section set in Australia. I now need to read it again with my teachers hat on so I can identify any sections that can be used as examples during English lessons. Thank you so much for giving me a delightful couple of days reading and inspiring the children at our school to get so immersed in their reading. I can't wait for the next instalment.
What the children said:

Your enthusiasm really rubbed off on the children. Many children purchased the book and we were able to talk about Millie’s' adventures. I was able to show my class where the events of the story took place by sharing a world map. Personally I enjoyed reading the book; I liked the way you mixed up fiction and fact in your description of the ancient wonders. I would certainly recommend you to any school.
What the children said:

I absolutely love the start of your book and I'm totally hooked on what might happen next!!! The start of it is just as great as Phillip Paulman's 'Dark Materials' and he is my favourite author ever! But you are just as great and I am looking forward to your future books. I love the character of Millie because she's just like me; very adventurous, fun-seeking, she plays with boys and stands up for what she believes in. Mille is the best fiction character I’ve ever read about!

South Molton Community College
What the teachers said:
Bev Turner - Head of English Faculty
John Howard’s visit to South Molton was truly inspirational. The students, particularly the boys, were engaged with the mix of fact and fiction. Year 7 were gripped by his enthralling tale of Millie and her grandfather and the adventure of “The key to Chintak”. Pupils were encouraged by John’s own story of his struggles with language as a dyslexic student. He developed a warm rapport with his audience through his energetic performance and we’re all looking forward to reading the book.
